Welcome to MFSC PreCan and Canskate Porgram!
Our coaches for this season are Ellie Daynes and Shelby Rever. Along with the many program assistants, without the volunteering of these young starskaters this program would not be possible. We really appreciate all our PA's.

What Is PreCan? (mon,wed 4-4:30)
A 30-minute non-parented class for children ages 3-5 who have not had any significant time on skates. It is designed to introduce children to the ice and help them become comfortable. This program teaches children the basics of how to get up when they fall down, how to move forward, basic backward movement and how to stop. Music, toys and games are used to help children feel ready to take the next step.
All lessons are done in a group format, so children must be somewhat independent and not require one-on-one supervision.
Once a participant has gained confidence and shown skill in gliding on each foot, stopping, and getting up from a down position they can move on to the CanSkate program.
What is CanSkate? (mon,wed 4-4:45)
CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. CanSkate uses nationally tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.
CanSkate teaches the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport whether the focus be for hockey, ringette, figure skating, speed skating or just skating for fun.
Designed for those children ages 5 and up who can work independently within a group lesson (children ages 3-5 may be moved into this program with permission of the CanSkate director after they have passed Pre-CanSkate).
Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions interactive using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning.
What will you learn?
A complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.
What should I wear?
SKATES- Skaters who are in Precan and Canskate may use hockey or figure skates. Either option is fine. There is not one that is easier to learn on. If parents have an idea roughly of which sport the skater will continue in we suggest starting with that specific skate. We advise the purchase of skates with laces, not molded plastic skates with buckles. Skates should be tied snugly and laces tucked away. Please have skates sharpened! It makes more of a difference than you think. Skates should be sharpened after 8-10
hours of use on an indoor rink. This time frame shrinks if skates are used on an outdoor rink or while walking around without guards.
CLOTHING- Skaters should dress in layered clothing that allows for movement. Waterproof/ski pants are a good idea especially for precan as skaters spend a lot of time learning how to fall down and get up. Mittens or gloves must also be worn.
